What is the view of marriage in your country?
Marriage is a major milestone in a Chinese person’s life, not only for the sake of marriage and companionship itself, but also because of the practice of ancestral worship and the continuation of the family line. This is especially so nowadays as most families have only one child, and so many children face undue pressure to get married.
As much as my personal views on marriage are rather liberal, I still find it rather heart-warming to see old couples walk down the street hand in hand. And the bilingual quote this week is a phrase that can be a sweet depiction of this scene, as well as used to wish the bride and groom well. The phrase is 白头偕老(báitóu-xiélǎo), and it literally means “becoming old and white-haired together,” or in my mind “till death do us part”.
