I love languages……. they are key to really making a connection with someone. I have become so frustrated and frankly disappointed with my lack of continued progress in mandarin. I lack daily opportunity to practise/listen/interact (lots of Cantonese speakers here in England), wo mei you jihui lianxi , wo mei xinxin. I spent 6 weeks in Shandong Province over the Autumn 2015 and slowly the “rusty filing cabinet” creaked open and with the kindness and effort of my Chinese contacts I came back (via a week in wonderful Singapore – where I heard practically NO spoken Mandarin!) enthused but with the same problems of daily practise unchanged. Language is fun but needs to be USED and HEARD. My Masters concerned the use of Western high art, in the form of classical ballet, as propaganda tool of the Chinese cultural revolution. Ah well……
I am delighted you have found – through your perceived failures – something that motivates you so much. I wish Mandarin Domus every continued success.
With kind regards,
zhu,
Sue Jeffs
Hi Sue, thanks for sharing your experience. Practice is indeed key to mastering any language, and without an environment, the challenges are indeed real. I personally find that it is especially challenging when progressing from intermediate level onwards. But hopefully you have found different ways to practice: watching movies or tv shows, finding a learning buddy etc. I hope you can find some interaction within the Dimsum Mandarin community too. Good luck to you too! π
